Developing Independent Learners

Sandra Carter · September 1, 2024

This course was developed in response to a clear need for students to become more independent and for schools to foster this independence through a range of strategies. Independent learning is a student-centered approach in which learners take charge of their own educational journey. They actively manage, direct, and assess their learning, making informed decisions about their goals and the methods they use to achieve them.

To cultivate such learners, schools must first recognise that each student has unique needs, interests, and abilities. As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that every student reaches their full potential.

During the course, participants will work individually and collaboratively to discuss, evaluate, and select appropriate learning methods. Sharing ideas is a key component, and participants should come prepared to discuss both their successes and challenges with the group.

After completing this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding the importance and benefits of independent/student-centred learning.
  • Stimulate discussion and share ideas and current practices that encourage students to be more independent.
  • Shift the mindsets of both students and teachers.
  • Develop a definition of ‘student-centred’ learning that we will use throughout the remainder of this course.
  • Analyse and design independent learning strategies, techniques, and activities
