This course benefits the ESL and mainstream English language teachers who directly work with students to implement language development and reading comprehension techniques. It also supports Special Education teachers who adapt ESL strategies to meet the diverse needs of students with Special Needs. By adopting the SIOP model (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol), ESL teachers will deliver content effectively while supporting the language development of ELLs and other students who need additional language support. The model aims to bridge the gap between content learning and language development. With this model, teachers have a toolbox of instructional techniques to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. After completing this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify how language is used in English classes and give students explicit instruction and practice with it.
- Make specific connection between the content being taught and students’ experience and prior knowledge
- Differentiate the level of English they use, the text, and other materials used among students
- Use strategies to make reading comprehensible through techniques such as visual aids, modeling, graphic organizers, etc.
