This five-week course is designed to help teachers conduct their own action research in order to solve real-life problems in their own classrooms. Unlike traditional research, which is often theoretical, action research allows teachers and educators to put their findings into practice and improve their class outcomes.
What is action research?
- An interactive research method for the social sciences and education
- Participatory or practical in scope
- Can be technical, collaborative, or critical
- Not theoretical; seeks to solve immediate problems and improve existing systems
As part of this course, teachers will identify the most pressing issues affecting their classes – academic, behavioral, or otherwise. They will be equipped with the tools they need to undertake their own action research study. The course will be interactive and teacher-centered, and will include classroom discussion, collaboration, idea sharing, and, ultimately, end with teachers presenting their proposals for action research in their own classrooms.
After completing this course, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding principles of action research, knowledge of research design and methods, including interviewing, observation, and surveying
- Apply principles of action research
- Utilise community-based knowledge to impact teaching and learning
- Evaluate and select tools for effectively observing their classrooms and solve pressing academic problems
