Preparing for Middle Leadership

Sandra Carter · August 31, 2024

All too often, effective teachers are promoted to middle leadership roles based on their teaching abilities.  However, strong teaching skills do not always equate to the skills required to be an effective middle leader.

This course will provide teachers with the necessary skills to excel as middle leader while continuing to make significant impact in the classroom and within the school. By empowering teachers who aspire to middle leadership, we initiate a succession planning process, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to become effective leaders.

Participants will engage in extensive discussions regarding the various responsibilities of a middle leader, aiming to identify which tasks should be prioristised. They will also be expected to actively contribute to these discussions, sharing diverse perspectives that will be explored collectively. Additionally, they will conduct a mini audit to reflect on their current skills and identify areas for further development. Various leadership styles will also be introduced, which participants will use to complete their homework.

After completing this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding the role of middle leaders in school.
  • Analyse the different available tools for effective leadership and management, including an understanding of different management styles.
  • Link the requirements of a successful school to the role of a middle leader, including application of Johari’s Window Model in a ML role.
  • Articulate the role of a middle leader and how it differs from a teacher and to be able to have useful discussions with senior leaders about ambitions.
