Kagan Structures

Ibrahim Mohammed · August 25, 2021

In this four-week course participants will explore Kagan structures, a system of cooperative learning based on peer support to engage learners and a variety of interactive structures in which learners are placed in mixed ability groups. Participants will embed their awareness of social dynamics, the importance of learning styles and ensure that all learners participate frequently and almost equally. By encouraging teamwork, teachers will be able to remove the elements of competition and insecurity within classrooms, replacing them with a culture of collaboration and mutual support.

This course will embed instructional strategies designed to promote cooperation and communication in the classroom, boost students’ confidence and retain their interest in learning. Behavioral issues during lessons will also be limited due to fully engaged learners and most important is that all ability groups will make progress and not the high ability learners at the expense of “struggling” learners.

After completing this course, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate the fundamental principles of Kagan Structures
  • Demonstrate understanding the efficacy of the Kagan Structures methodology and its benefits
  • Develop and improve; team-building, communication, knowledge building, decision making, thinking, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Design many Kagan Structures activities and incorporate them into existing curricular as learning tools
