The Characteristics of Effective Learning in Early Years

Faranak Berenjan · September 12, 2022

In planning and guiding what children learn, practitioners must reflect on the different rates at which children are developing and adjust their practice appropriately. Three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:

  • Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’
  • Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
  • Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things

The above have been taken from the current ‘Development Matters’ document. It focuses on how children learn, rather than what they learn. It states the importance of the adult role for effective learning in an Early Years setting. It clearly identifies the importance of ‘planning’, ‘guiding’, ‘reflecting’ and ‘adjusting’. Early Years classrooms need to be rich with learning opportunities. Through this course, we would like to promote and inspire early years practitioners to be creative, innovative and try safe and effective new ideas for planning. Also, by the end of the course, the participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of using the EYFS curriculum outcomes for planning effectively.

The purpose of this six-week training is to give a better insight to the Early Years Practitioners, on the importance of effective and differentiated planning. Planning should have a purpose and practitioners should be following the EYFS curriculum outcomes, to plan for sessions.

After completing this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding how children learn
  • Identify and explore the characteristics and the seven key features of effective Learning
  • Demonstrate understanding the concept of continuous provision, playing and exploring.
  • Analyse the importance of active learning and incorporate it into planning
  • Provide and create opportunities for children to think and create critically
  • Implement some behaviour management strategies during play
  • Identify and discuss gaps in development and learning that some children may have due to online learning and the pandemic and come up with solutions
  • Differentiate and plan according to students’ needs and interests, create fun and engaging activities, support children during activities.
